Over the weekend of the 25th through 27th of April, 2003, Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) convened the 2003 Walter Mitty Historic Races at Road Atlanta. In the annual “Mittys”, HSR gathers dozens of historic race cars and vintage cars converted to racing purposes. This year saw a good turnout, including a former Jacques Villeneuve CART car, a former F1 Ferrari, and a 1991 Benneton F1 car. The ex-Villeneuve racer almost set a new lap record at Road Atlanta, turning a lap of 1:11.0 under the masterful hand of Duncan Dayton!

It was really agonizing for The Nuts to be around all of that racing and not be able to get out on track themselves, even though they have the cars at home, ready to go. They thought Carl was going to go psycho on them. ;-)

The Nuts acted as pit crew for their friend Greg Kimbrough. Greg drives a 1974 Triumph Spitfire (1296 cc) in class 3M for vintage cars. The weekend was successful for Greg, and we all had a good time.

  • Greg set fastest time in class in the afternoon practice session Friday.
  • Greg's Spitfire had a little trouble generating power on Saturday during the Historics Enduro one hour race, but a convocation of the illuminated erupted around his garage area on Saturday afternoon and they sorted the problems out for Sunday's Dash race.
  • Greg took a class 3M win in Sunday's Dash race setting a fastest lap of 1:58.616.
The next two garage areas over contained IMSA GTU RX-7s, much to The Nuts' delight. Those were awesome cars, even though they bore only superficial resemblance to an actual RX-7.
